About Tri Unify
Tri Unify is a non-profit organization without borders.
Tri Unify seeks to increase the overall health and wellness of the Black and Latino communities by providing resources that facilitate participation in multi-sport lifestyles.
Blacks and Latinos are disproportionately affected by diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In the United States, 6.6% of whites ages 20 years and over have been diagnosed with type II Diabetes, while 11.8% of Blacks and 10.4% of Latinos have been diagnosed with this disease. More than 40% of Black adult Americans have high blood pressure and are at risk for heart attack or stroke. These heart conditions develop at younger ages and are becoming more severe. Weight control and exercise are primary methods of combating these diseases. (Statistics from the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association.)
To achieve its goals, Tri Unify engages in several activities aimed at reaching a wide spectrum of the Black and Latino communities and their supporters. This organization began by generating a database of individuals interested and/or involved in the sport of triathlon, sports related businesses and other interested organizations. Tri Unify is now enlisting these individuals to help frame a public forum for information access. Methods of engaging the public include:
- Website –The website will provide a platform to highlight member achievements and an online discussion forum. The website will also provide information on training strategies and tools, health and nutrition, upcoming multisport events and overall club information.
- Seminars/Clinics – Monthly seminars and clinics will be organized to provide training assistance in all three disciplines (swimming, biking, and running), health and nutrition guidance and race preparation.
- Organized Group Training – Weekly group training sessions will be held in each discipline (swimming, biking, running). The training sessions are designed to provide mentorship for less experienced members, to provide motivation for all members and to create a team environment.
- Volunteering – Tri Unify will enlist the assistance of current members, local leaders, local businesses and the overall community in a campaign to disseminate the organization’s message and engage support. Volunteer efforts will include but are not limited to: recruiting volunteers for local races and partnering with local communities and organizations to participate in local and national health and fitness events.
- Adult Triathlon Bootcamp (2011) – In 2011, Tri Unify will sponsor an adult bootcamp which will target Black and Latino men and women with no prior triathlon experience, who fall in high risk categories for diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The purpose of the camp is to help individuals meet their goals for fitness, weight loss and to help them embrace an active lifestyle. Tri Unify will sponsor these individuals by providing coaching, nutritional guidance and team support. The final goal for each individual will be to compete in a triathlon after the bootcamp.
Tri Unify will expand its efforts nationally while coordinating with other local Triathlon Clubs, and organizations with similar interests.
